Pharmacology Alcohol Lab

Experiment 901-Alcohol

Supplementary Information

Students are expected the calculate the BAC expected from the alcohol consumed using the following equations:

Step 1  Calculate the mass(g) of ethanol consumed
a.       Ask for the % of alcohol in the drink.  It is usually given in %vol/vol =D
Volume consumed:  Vodka : 2 x 50 ml= 100 ml
                                   Sherry: 2 x 80ml = 160 ml
                                   Rum:   2 x  40 ml = 80ml

Vol EtOH consumed= D ¸ 100 x volume consumed
Mass of EtOH = vol of EtOH x 0.8 g/ml(density of EtOH)

Step 2: Calculate the volume of the body that is water

Using
70Kg as the weight of an average adult
68% as the total body water content
1 g/ml ad the density of water
Then volume of body water = 70000 g x 68% ¸1 g/ml = 47.6 L

Step3: Calculate the volume of the body water that is blood

Since 80% of body water is Blood then
             Vol of water that is blood = 47.6 x 80% = 38.08L

Step 4: Calculate BAC
BAC =  Mass of EtOHg/38.08L = g/L

Convert to  g/100ml and the to %BAC

STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO CALCULATE THE BAC FOR ALL ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE CONSUMED AND COMPARE IT WITH BREATHALYSER VALUES
