Hello everyone,

 I want to wish you the best of luck on your preparations. During the difficult times, always remember "in the confrontation between the stream and the rock, the stream always wins. Not through strength but through persistence".

 Also, we want everyone to be fully satisfied with the purchase of their personal clinical equipment. So, to ensure we meet and surpass your expectations, a confirmation list is presented below. We are asking everyone to review this list CAREFULLY, as this is the respective order we have on our system for you. 

Please look for your name and order and do the "3 point check", check for the:

         1. Type of Package, whether Classic S.E II, Cardiology III or Equipment only

         2. Color of your Stethoscope.

               -NOTE: Like any picture, the actual colour may have some shade variation from what is seen on your screen.

         3. ENGRAVING- 

               -Most important because engravings are permanent and can NOT be returned. Remember the maximum is 14 characters including spaces  

                and punctuations.

               -So we advice that you double check the spelling carefully, then have it reviewed by your best friend while your mother okays it with 

                your father.

 If there are any changes to be made, please email them to Rani (ranisittol@gmail.com) as soon as possible, with the subject of the email "Change to My Order". Please send all corrections before Thursday 5pm as the finalized list will be sent off to the supplier at this time. If no correction email is received it will indicate that your order details are correct and final.

My interaction with the class has been great and I want to encourage you to continuing to work hard (so you have an excuse to have ridiculous amounts of fun during the holiday period).

Secret Santa and Place of Safety Collection

Secret Santa

The Holiday Season is fast approaching so before you hop that flight or take that long drive back

home make sure you send some Christmas cheer to the people who, over the past year and a half

you’ve grown to like… or love ;) Whether you want to maintain the suspense anonymously or be

bold with your name on Monday, November 21 start placing your candy cane delivery orders!

The small and large candy canes are approximately 3 and 6 inches in size respectively and order

options are as follows:

1. SMALL cane and a Christmas tag- $50

2. SMALL cane and a SPECIALTY Christmas Card- $75

3. LARGE cane and a Christmas tag- $100

4. LARGE cane and a SPECIALTY Christmas Card- $125

Orders can be placed with Deandra, Gizelle, Shari or Tiffany until Friday, November 25. For

orders with specialty cards i.e. Options 2 and 4 please feel free to go directly to Samantha.

Candy Cane delivery will take place between Monday November 28 and Wednesday

November 30.

Place of Safety Collection

The Strathmore Place of Safety is located in Spanish Town (close to GC Foster College) and

currently houses 37 wards of the state ranging from ages 2- 25. Funds will be collected from the

class starting on Monday November 21 until Friday November 25 in order to offset costs for

a Christmas Concert which will be held for the home on Friday December 23 from 12- 3 pm.

Funds collected will be used to purchase ice cream, cake, associated utensils and decorations for

the children. Please support!!

The Standing Committee on Public Health (SCOPH) presents “SOBER: The Anti-Alcohol Abuse Campaign”.

On Thursday, November 17, 2011, there will be a place in the PLT for everyone! Share with us why you drink or don’t drink, a regretful tale of intoxication, an account of a loved one lost to drunk driving, a nameless friend’s embarrassing story; whatever’s on your mind.

Not bold enough? Can’t make it on the day? No problem! Anonymous notes/ letters are now being collected. Jhoelle Beckford has the private box every day, so feel free to just drop something in. You’ll be helping out our brothers and sisters in the struggle.

There will also be a competition for the best performance (song, poem, skit; anything) discouraging alcohol abuse. $6,000 CASH PRIZE!!!

Digestive Pathology

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

This tutorial is supplementary to the lectures on diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and is designed to consolidate factual knowledge about common gastrointestinal disorders through case discussions.

By the end of the tutorial students should be able to:

Ø  Classify gastrointestinal haemorrhage

Ø  Discuss common causes of upper gastrointestinal tract haemorrhage

Ø  Outline the pathology of various causes and mechanisms of haemorrhage

Ø  Discuss the pathogenesis of Portal Hypertension

Ø  Discuss the causes and consequences of cirrhosis of the liver

Ø  Discuss gastrointestinal neoplastic disorders

Ø  Appreciate the natural history and prognosis of each disorder

The following cases will be discussed

CASE 1

A 65-year-old man was brought to the Accident and Emergency Unit at the UHWI by friends having been found in a collapsed state in the bathroom of a popular night club where he had spent most of the evening drinking.  When he was examined he was somewhat disoriented in time and space, had slurred speech and had no recollection of the events of the evening although he was fully conscious.  Alcohol was smelt on his breath and there was blood and vomitus on his clothes.

He stated that he had been relatively well in the past except that he had noticed that his abdomen was becoming distended and that his palms now looked redder than usual.  He had no known chronic illness.

The significant examination findings were a rapid thready pulse of 92/min, blood pressure 90/60 mm Hg and cold and clammy skin.  No organs were palpated in his abdomen but this was distended and there was evidence of a fluid thrill. His chest was clear and no central nervous system deficits were noted.

He was diagnosed as having had an upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage with shock and referred to the gastrointestinal service for further management.

QUESTIONS

1.         What are the possible causes of upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage (haematemesis) in this patient?

2.                  For each of these disorders, give an account of the:       

a.       Mechanism of haemorrhage

b.      What is the most likely cause in this patient?

c.       What other supporting findings may be present on examination?

3.                  What is the most likely underlying disease in this patient?

4.                  What is the most likely cause of the underlying disease?

a.       Discuss other possible causes and consequences of the underlying disease.

CASE 2

A 37-year-old man presented to his private doctor with a history of weight loss and exertional dyspnea.  On systematic enquiry he admitted to episodic diarrhoea and a family history of gastrointestinal disease.  A fecal occult blood test done was positive.  Colonoscopy was performed and multiple lesions were identified, the largest of which was biopsied.

1.         What is the most likely diagnosis?

2.         What is the likely result of the biopsy?

3.         Are there any other associated aetiologic factors?

4.         If a CT scan of the abdomen revealed pelvic lymphadenopathy, what would be the stage and prognosis?

T & T drive

FROM T&T DRIVE TO ST.MONICA’s CHILDREN HOME!

The toothbrush and toothpaste drive was FANTASTIC!!!!!! There was indeed a lot of smiling and laughter!!! A team of Social Arms and DDS representatives went to St.Monica’s Children’s home in Chapelton , Clarendon on Sunday October 23rd. It was an adventure because we had no idea how far or what we would encounter over many hills and valleys but it was a worthwhile trip. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted, we then proceeded to start our program involving singing songs; SMILE A WHILE and WITH CHRIST IN THE VESSEL YOU CAN SIMLE AT THE STORM. After we prayed we played a getting- to- know- you- game called Four corners , the kids were asked to draw their favourite fruit, what they want to become, their hero and what animal they would want to be. Dr.Shawnette Finegan-Bailey accompanied the team and gave the kids a Dental Hygiene talk which was entertaining and very educational and demonstrative (BIG TEETH). We then distributed the dental packages with the donations from the class , the contents of this package also included brochures and stickers donated from Dr. Finegan-Bailey. As things came to a close it was hard to say goodbye but we played one game where we held hands in a circle and tried to fit through a hoola hoop without breaking the circle!! VERY FUN!! I’m GRATEFUL FOR ALL THOSE WHO DONATED TO THE DRIVE AND CAME OUT TO SUPPORT!!!
