General Guidelines for Students with Failing Grades (Years 1-2 MBBS/DDS)

The system has been reopened (for Summer 2010/11) to facilitate the registration of the MBBS students needing to repeat examinations  in courses listed below.  Please  advise/encourage students to go on line and register for the course(s) applicable to them.  The system will close at midnight on July 15, 2011.

General Guidelines for Students with Failing Grades (Years 1-2 MBBS/DDS)

1.      A student who has failed a course should repeat the course at the next available sitting, subject to limitations on the number of credits that can be attempted at a sitting (see note5 below).
2.      A student who, at the end of an academic year, has failed courses which total more than 9 credits, will NOT be allowed to proceed to the next year of the programme. i.e., to progress to Year 2 a student must not be carrying more than 9 credits from Year 1 courses and to progress to Year 3 a student must not be carrying more than 9 credits from both Year 1 and 2 courses.
[Please note Regulation 10.1:  “Students are required to satisfactorily complete all prescribed MB BS Stage I and BMedSci courses of study and pass all course examinations before entry to Stage II unless exemptions …… apply.”]

3.      If a student fails a course after three attempts he/she will be required to withdraw from the programme
4.      Repeat examinations are held in the Summer period for those students who have failed courses. Except in special circumstances students will not be permitted to sit Summer examinations as their first sitting
5.      Students will normally NOT be permitted to sit more than a total of 12 credits (from year1 and year 2 courses) in the Summer repeat examinations
6.      Students sitting Summer repeat examinations will be required to pay an examinations only fee which is calculated based on the number of credits being attempted. The fee per credit is published in the Undergraduate Financial Information and Registration Guidelines 2010/11 (page 17 – use per credit rate for Nursing and Physical Therapy).
7.      Students who are sitting Summer repeat examinations are required to register and pay for these examinations before the examination date. The dates for registration will be announced before the end of Semester 2
8.      The dates for the repeat examinations will be published during Semester 2. The usual dates are as follows: Year 2 courses: Mid-June (before the start of Year 3); Year 1 courses: mid to late August (before the start of Year 2).
