Lectures

So in light of the fact that I am receiving complaints of people not being able to find lectures easily I am creating a link to each folder to what was made available to us. If you cant find a lecture at this point I would suggest either consulting the SCOME CD or checking on OURVLE. Happy Studying and Good Luck to us all.

Necessary Clarification

Good night Rani,

I am writing to you, President of the Class of 2015, because I have been made aware of the fact that several of your classmates are upset re the message that I sent to my class.

I would like to clear certain things up to ensure that relations between your class (2015) and mine (2014) are kept at a respectable and amicable level.

Firstly, the message was sent only to my class; we were not seeking to start any unnecessary drama. It appears that a member of my class copied the message and forwarded it 2k12 and 2k13 who then sent it to your class. The purpose of the message was not to inform the other classes within the Faculty, which sadly took place beyond our control.

Secondly, as stated clearly in my message, what was relayed to my classmates was conveyed to me by Mr. Solomon. We understand that the entire letter was not about Mr. Solomon but it included things about him. It affected us through the cancellation of our spotter and as such impacted us, hence why it was discussed.

Thirdly, my class does NOT have a problem with your class. We have a problem with the individual (s) who reports lecturers without following protocol, especially when it ends up affecting our learning process as it is currently doing (cancellation of the histology review spotter).

Fourthly, we do have a problem with certain things that were said re Mr. Solomon in the letter to the authorities and as such the class will express its rights to defend him where deemed fit.

I trust that this message will serve to clear the air and stop further misunderstandings on the issue. It was never my intention to upset your class or open the doorway for threats to be hurled toward yourself and your classmates; that resulted from others getting carried away and straying from proper conduct.

P.S. - Several of your classmates have indicated to me that they are writing letters in Mr. Solomon's defence. My class is grateful for that level of support.

Regards,
Steven Hamilton

RE: Anonymous Letter

MBBS/DDS Class of 2015
University of the West Indies, Mona
Kingston 7
Jamaica, W.I.

April 22, 2011

My fellow colleagues,
On the threshold of the examination period, I was informed about an anonymous letter sent to the Principal, and Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, UWI. The letter raised many concerns of confidential nature.

I was ably informed by the President of the Jamaica Medical Students’ Association (JAMSA) that the Dean acknowledges receipt of the letter and that whatsoever decisions to be made, will be made.

I am indeed appalled that a letter of complaint would be sent again, without first using the Executive that the class elected. We feel as though we are not trusted, and failing in our responsibilities to serve you. Concerns like these, should be properly filed, with optimal grammar and respect for Administration, and going through the routes provided for you.

With this in mind, I write to the member of the Class of 2015 who wrote the letter, to set up an anonymous email (since that is your preferred choice of modus operandi) and email me: ranisittol@gmail.com. If you do, I will even avail my phone number. Let us discuss your concerns in an open, more mature forum.

I also write to the members of the Class of 2015, and encourage and implore you to move through the routes provided, that is the powers that be: your Class Executive, Departmental heads, Stage Co-ordinator, Programme Co-ordinator, then Dean.
I write to my colleagues in our senior classes and I understand your frustration, especially with the Class of 2015. I must apologize that our actions have affected your preparation for your examinations. I do not however appreciate threatening calls made to members of my Class, or my Class Executive. I do not expect that medical professionals would behave in this manner.

I do hope that you all understand the burden that I and the members of the Executive now bear, in handling this issue. I must say that I am not supportive of anonymous threatening calls to members of my Executive.
I also use this medium to say that no letter, and none of the complaints expressed were discussed with me. None of the issues raised were pointed out in any way, formal or informal to me. I say this to say that the Executive of the Class of 2015 was not approached, and as such could not have given ‘permission’ for these actions to have been taken.
This issue must be resolved as soon as possible, and the anonymous letters, calls and texts of threats must stop.

President,
MBBS/DDS Class of 2015

Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine: Self Study

Dear colleague,

The MB BS Programme, Faculty of Medical Sciences is due an accreditation visit by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) in 2012. The previous one was done in 2006.

In preparation for this process the faculty must complete a self-study. The student self-study (this questionnaire) is the contribution of the students and must be done independently of the faculty. It seeks to collect and review data about the medical school and its educational programmes, identify institutional strengths and issues requiring action, and define strategies to ensure that the strengths are maintained and any problems addressed.
Please complete the entire questionnaire as honestly as possible. Answering all the questions is important to our evaluation.
