This is it...please read it all (it has a story)

OFFICIAL CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
(Forgive my usual length)

Today we celebrate. Yes, that's it: we celebrate!

We celebrate because the light of Christ offers hope for sinners like us, to see move out of the darkness of this world, and into the light of hope and truth.

We celebrate, for as Medical and Dental students, we are given that opportunity to share the light of the World with the many who are ill and sick. Remember that responsibility.

Let me share with you a 'Christmas Legend.'

When Jesus was born, an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and instructed him to flee to Egypt, so that the Christ child would be safe from Herod's fury. Joseph obeyed, and took his wife and the newborn child and fled to Egypt.

On their way to Egypt, they decided to stop in a cave to protect themselves from the elements of the night. Lo and behold, in that dark and lonely cave was a big, black, poisonous spider.

The spider saw the Christ child, and knew exactly that in his little cave was the Saviour of the world. The spider thought to himself, "what can I do for the Saviour of the world? I am just a poisonous spider?!"

He thought, and decided that he would weave a thick and beautiful web over the mouth of the cave, so as to protect the family from the elements even better.

Soon after the Spider completed the magnificent web, a detachment of Herod's army came to the cave! The general gave orders to his soldiers to search the cave! When the commander who had gone to search the cave saw the thick web, and the huge spider he jumped back, gasped and said "General, if anyone had gone into this cave, the web would have been broken...and the spider would have killed them!"

So on went the army, so close and yet so far, from the Saviour of the world.

Colleagues, even this legend may be true or not, you may consider yourself as ONLY a poisonous spider- but consider the use you have for God, and His kingdom. Furthermore...YOU WILL BE A DOCTOR! What better way than to heal the spiritual needs of your patients, as you attend to their physical needs?

I take this opportunity to thank Deandra Poyser, the Fundraising Chair, who on her own initiative baked a cake for my brother and the other children at the home at which he stays. My brother, who has severe autism, and I'm sure the many other disabled children at the home greatly appreciate YOUR MAGNIFICENT WEB. For in the little things you do, God will do great.

Remember everyone, what little you can do for the many unfortunate around the world; in your homes around the world- be it in Trinidad or Tobago, in St. Kitts or St. Lucia, in New York or Botswana, in England or Iraq or Nigeria, maybe even St. Vincent, Guyana or Belize or even in Jamaica- RMEMEBER THE HOPE YOU ARE TO BRING.

I also take this opportunity to thank God for His protection; a member of our class was in a serious accident earlier this week, but sustained no injuries and is alive and well, though the car is destroyed.

Finally, remember that though we sin, if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us. Make space for the Saviour of the world in your heart today.

GREAT Trivia Night!!

I am really appreciative of the support received yesterday!!  The turnout was great!!  I hoped everyone who came learnt and also shared their knowledge with the rest of the class.  A total of 70 persons came and thus a whopping $3500 was made from ticket sales, a remaining $2500 was made from refreshments (totaling $6000).  Since all persons who participated were really pleased we would like to try this again next semester (maybe more than once), hopefully with more support.  I just want to thank: Nicole Bromfield, Jhaneal Solomon, Rani Sittol, Kimberly Salmon, Kelly-Lois Gooden, Te –Anne Chislom,  Nasheva & David Miguel for helping me to put on this marvelous event.  Thanks so much for the support guys!

Re exemption FD11A course; only two persons so far are recommended for exemption(cannot gives the names at this time)  but Mr. Cresser (lecturer)  is still awaiting the  approval of his faculty.  He said there are about three persons who did UC200 long ago because the course outline was not submitted he is trying to find someone to verify whether or not  the content is similar and if after such a long time exemption can be granted.

I should be hearing from him this afternoon but will be in an exam so I have asked Ms. Daley in the Physiology Section  of  BMS to follow up with him.  So please check with her about 2pm

Anatomy and Histology Review

1. SATURDAY-@ 10.00 about 6 anatomy lecturers will be at stations. Groups of 20 students (you guys) will spend about 20 minutes at each station speaking with and learning from them. At the end of 20 minutes...you move on to next station.

Meetings Galore: Updates you may want to hear

Hi all,
I spent over 4 hours of precious study time this week in meetings, on your behalf, all over the place.

One of those meetings was with the principal! You might all be pleased to hear that the principal opted to follow up on some of the concerns we had with him in our first meeting. He organized a meeting with MITS and us so as to ensure they know of our Technology issues.

In his opening remarks, the principal said to the MITS bosses (in essence) 'These gentlemen are from the class of 2015, and they staged what a normal day in their class was like.' He went on to state his displeasure with it.

You were all represented by

4. Kadeem Knight, IT Team

Long story short: In a week and a half (from last thursday) we have been promised the following things:

1. We will be able to communicate with Montego Bay! We will be able to SEE and HEAR them and dialogue back and forth with them. (Esp. since they have beauty queens down there...that has added advantages :p)
   
2. PCLT will be SEEN from PLT, and will be HEARD without that 'dancehall sounding thing' (<---Principal's words...not mine) and that you can sit wherever you are in PCLT and ask the question
3. There will be internet in PLT 
4. Improved Audio :D :D :D 
5. Projector fixed in PCLT. 

But seeing that in a week and a half we'll not be in classes...come next semester expecting your money's worth...I guess.

In all honesty though...I feel accomplished!

• We opened a bank account (that takes more work than you can imagine)
• We're getting lots of improved technology 
• We FINALLY selected a jersey 
• We have multiple choice questions on the internet...thanks to VPI Silvera
• We lost a football match :( --- but exercise is good for you?
• We had no Docs on Deck :(
• We had a fundraiser (White Tee and Sweats Day)
• We're the only MBBS Class without a GMail...but with better technology Blogspot <3

• We have class devotions and prayers
• We have Queens in our class ;)

WORLD AIDS WEEK

Good day 2k15,
This week will be WORLD AIDS WEEK and the University will be hosting events all week, put on by various student groups.

SCORA will be heavily involved in two activities both on Thursday, Nov 25th.

1. The 1st is a Condom tree and Information booth that will run during the day at a location to be decided soon and...
2. then we will be putting up a booth at Red Integration later on in the day at the Student's Union.

If you are interested in helping to execute either ventures, let myself or a SCORA Exec member know as we still have finishing touches to make with the various groups and you can be involved in this.

Please support the various student organized events occuring this week as we seek to increase everyone's knowledge base on sexual matters and sexual health.

P.O.L. Guidelines

PROBLEM ORIENTED LEARNING (POL)

METHODOLOGY

1.                  The class will be divided into groups and the size of a group depends on the number of cases to be studied at a particular period of the semester.

2.                  Each group will be assigned a case on which they will give an oral presentation to the class and to a panel consisting of members of the academic staff.

3.                  Each group, although not presenting every case, should study all cases. Students must ensure that they have received all the cases to be presented at any particular seminar.

4.                  The group should meet and appoint a leader and a recorder. This does not absolve anyone of the responsibility for having a personal record of what transpires, but the main responsibility for maintaining a record is that of the recorder. The group leader should try to ensure that all members of the group participate, and that the discussion remains focused on the task at hand. Interim conclusions should be clearly summarized at intervals for the benefit of the recorder and of all group members.

5.                  Where values are quoted, resulting from tests, the norms should be identified and the possible pathophysiological significance of deviation from the norm should be discussed.

6.                  The groups should meet at times convenient for them to discuss the cases.

7.                  Each group should decide on how many of the group members present the case; the fewer the better.

8.                  Case presentations should last no more than twenty minutes thus allowing adequate time for the members of the panel or the class to give feedback and discuss aspects of the case or presentation.

9.                  All students are encouraged to participate in the discussion following the presentations.

10.              The content of the cases and presentation will form part of the material from which the course examination will be set.

A young woman travelling as a front seat passenger was involved in a
motor vehicle accident and suffered an injury to her right hip. Movement
at the hip, foot and ankle joints were limited by pain. At the emergency
unit, the attending physician noticed that her right lower limb was held in a
characteristic position suggestive of a posterior hip dislocation and this was
confirmed by Xrays. The emergency orthopaedic surgeon then reduced the
dislocation in O.R. Her recovery was such that she could now fully move the
hip but that after six months, movements to the ankle and foot joints did not
return.


1. Describe the anatomical features that contribute to the stability of the hip
joint.


2. Describe the blood and nerve supply to the hip joint.


3. What are the clinical features of dislocation of the hip joint?


4. Explain the cause for lack of movements in the ankle/foot joints initially
as well as for later on.

A 24 yr old male was shot from a buckshot rifle in his upper left forearm. The man
presented to the emergency unit about 4 hours later with significant swelling of the arm.
Apart from obvious pain and multiple small entry wounds, the hand was noted to be
pale and there were no radial or ulnar pulses. X Rays showed fracture to the shafts of
the radius and ulna bone. He was immediately prepared for and taken to the operating
theatre where he had fixation of the fractures, followed by direct repair to the brachial
artery which was transected and repair of the median nerve. Following the surgery the
man was noted to have much more swelling of the forearm with decreased pulses 6 hours
after surgery. He was again taken back to theatre for further surgery with a successful
outcome.


1. Explain normal ossification of a long bone, and ossification following a fracture.

2. Describe the histology of a typical neuron and its axon (in a peripheral nerve), and
describe the changes that occur following nerve repair. (13,14)

A 35yr.old teacher noticed that some 2 years after delivery of her first child that she had
developed varicose veins along the medial side of her leg. Her condition was worsened
by her occupation which involved long standing, so much so that in spite of conservative
medical management she had developed an ulcer over the medial aspect of her ankle and
varicosities over the outer aspect of the ankle and foot. She initially was treated by having

Aim (s): There are several aims to this lab-Sessions 1 & 2

Method:  Do not write out the method, you can state “As written in the DD3MB DNA instructions Hand-out, 2010”.  Note any changes made especially in Session 2.

Results: 

1.      Sample calculations of your Genotype Frequency, Random Match Probability and Paternity Analysis-Part A (should see clear distinction of formulas used for each set of calculations)

2.      Table(s) of calculated results to include the above outcomes.

Discussion:  

• Discuss the extraction method used for your DNA preparation (draw knowledge from your forensics report)

Hint: Chelex method-steps involving use of buffer, centrifuge, boiling and incubation. Why were these steps done? Efficiency of Chelex method?

• Comment on your result of the random match probability-what does it mean?
• Comment also on the result of the Paternity Index of the case file (A)-what does this value mean? If you were to calculate (B) what would the CPI outcome be & mean?
• Can the Random Match Probability, CPI and DNA profiling be applicable? State three (should be easy)
