Progression to 4th Year

THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST INDIES AT MONA, JAMAICA
Faculty of Medical Sciences

Office of the Dean

Dear Year 3 MBBS Students

We wish to remind you that under MBBS Regulations a student should have passed
all Stage 1 courses before progressing to Stage 2 (i.e. Year 4-5)
Registration for Year 4 will be opening in March (exact date to be announced) and students’
records will be checked electronically to ensure compliance with this requirement
(except for MDSC3201, 3202 and 3203 which would not have been completed).
Any student whose transcript does not show passes in all prerequisite courses will require
lecturer’s approval for registration and this will result in a delay in the process.
We urge all students to:
(1) review their transcripts and if there are missing grades to ensure that he/she is
registered for the courses
(2) submit course information to the Undergraduate Affairs Office so that the
grades can be added as soon as possible

Smoker Handing Over Ceremony

Dear Members of the Medical and Dental Class of 2015,

September 16, 2012 saw the end of our wonderful, critically-acclaimed Smoker production. Following the event, we embarked on a period of account settlement and debt collection. We have, at this time, collected the majority of what is owed to us, though there are still a few persons in our class who have not submitted monies owed for tickets and we would like to encourage the few outstanding debtors to settle their accounts promptly.

To date we have collected approximately $2,060,000 JMD and have therefore surpassed our projected target of $16,000 US ($1,360,000 JMD). We shall continue to collect monies owed over the coming month in order to complete this process and have 100% accountability. Additionally we will be committing the balance of funds to one or two of the remaining minor charity interests identified during the planning process last year.

It is our great pleasure to advise you that March 1, 2013 has been designated for the Official Handing-Over Ceremony for Smoker 2012. It will be a formal event and will host several invited guests such as our sponsors, UHWI executives, staff of the Gastrointestinal Unit of UHWI, representatives of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, members of the Press and so on. Please ensure you are all dressed in your professional attire. The proceedings will commence at 4:00 p.m. in the Main Medical Lecture Theatre, UHWI.

It is our wish to have the entire Medical and Dental Class of 2015 available for the event and are in negotiations with the Dean to grant permission for this. We will keep the class abreast of this information as it becomes available. Ms. Kimberly Salmon and myself will be managing this event and so if you have ANY suggestions or inquiries, kindly direct them via phone, BBM, or email to either of us. Additional communication will follow over the coming weeks as we prepare for the event.

Regarding the matter of the highly anticipated Smoker DVDs, securing the completed disks was a long and trying process. Finally however, we have received the finished product. We will be announcing an official order date and price soon and the DVDs will be available for delivery at the Handing-Over Ceremony.

Finally, thanks so much once again for ALL that you have contributed to the success of our Smoker and we look forward to working together once more to ensure a smooth and professional handing-over of funds to our charity. If there is anything that you feel has been overlooked, once more, please contact either Ms. Salmon or myself via the aforementioned means. We look forward to hearing from you!

Warmest regards!

Summary and recommendations:
For your 3rd Year clerkships the followings books are recommended:
1.       Aids in Undergraduate Medicine (a handy companion for medical clerkship especially for the OSCE, a definite must for any medical student entering their clinical years)
2.       Notes in Paediatrics (foundation topics and principles for the Paediatric rotation)
3.       Notes in Surgery (foundation topics and principles for the Surgery rotation)
4.       Get Through Medical School (1000 Questions to carry you through your 4 chief rotations, namely Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, and Obs & Gyn. A priceless tool in the preparation for end of clerkship exams as well as final MBBS.)

Also you may want to consider getting one or all of the following:
1.       MBBS compilation 90s to 2007
2.       Medicine Questions (Includes: MBBS 2008 – 11; End of clerkship exams)
3.       Surgery Questions (Includes: MBBS 2008- 11; 100 Cases in surgery)
For your 4th Year clerkships:
1.       Roopnarinesingh Obstetrics Text +/- Dr. Bassaw’s Essentials of Obstetrics. (Dr. Bassaw is a Trinidadian OnG consultant, one of the examiners and also sets the MBBS OnG paper when Trinidad is assigned.)
2.       Obstetrics and Gynaecology Question book (Includes: MBBS question 2008 – 11; Roop MCQs; and more)
3.       Cases in Chemical Pathology (4th year Pathology and Microbiology rotation)
In final year you commence Gynaecology and would then require the Roopnarinesingh Gynaecology text.
Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine: Board Review is recommended for those who want further questions to practice for MBBS also for USMLEs. Divided into questions based on medical subspecialties, it will definitely prove to be a useful study tool.
