Junior Med

Good day to 2k15,

in regards to the Junior medicine rotation.

this rotation comprises of an MCQ paper and an OCSE.   the things to
take from this rotation include:

1. your ability to examine a patient.  This is probably the most
important thing about this rotation. It is in the rotation u acquire
most of your skills in examination of the patients. Please i plead
with you to practice on as many patients as you can, because after
this you will not get another chance to learn.  In the senior
rotations you will not have the time to learn these thing again.
Stick close to the seniors who will be REFINING there skills.  Also
please expose your self to the different signs you can find using your
examination.  NOTE: If u cannot identify a murmur you 1st few times,
please don't get frustrated you just need to be able to appreciate it.
i have attached a fwe pdf's about examination... use it as a guide..
and u will learn the uwi style with you consultant .... there is a
document with the "uwi Style" but i can't find it right now... i will
forward it to u at a later date...

ALSO to practice taking a patients history (you may or maynot )

2. there is a list of topics to cover in a document in the attachment.
Please use this as a guide to study.  but wen you have a patient with
a disorder take the initiative to read about that illness as this will
be what your consultant will ask you on rounds. (i personally used
EMEDICINE to read through... wikipedia is questionable on a few topics
and i am a bit hesitant about using it and will always double check
with emedicine ... they give you a good break down about the disease.)

3.your procedure card: this is very important and you should read
around the procedures and things that need to see that are on that
card.  the exams may ask you about what is one your card.  for the
procedures read indications, the procedure and complications. the
completion of the card is not a must you will not see everything on
it, but try and do the things you can, such as IV's etc.

4. the MCQ and OCSE. the difficulty of this varies greatly... just
study and you should do fine... the OSCE is a reflection of your
practice.  they are accessing your style how smooth you are and if u
miss out anything in the examination. the Aim is to finish every exam
in 5 mins and the following 3-4 mins you have a discussion. If u don't
finish in the exam you can tell them what you would do  and you will
be fine
5. your case notes are very important for thie rotation... i can't
remember the actual percentage... but u can ask... so  make an effort
to do the S.O.A.P for your patients daily....and try and write a good
discussion....

THIS IS NOT A DIFFICULT ROTATION IF U MAKE SURE U KNOW YOU
EXAMINATIONS AND ARE ACTIVE ON WARD ROUNDS AND PAY ATTENTION WITH WHAT
IS GOING ON AROUND YOU
ENJOY IT AND MAKE THE BEST OF IT

REMEMBER PRACTICE THE YOUR EXAMINATIONS!

Book

Junior Paeds

Good day to 2k15,

in regards to the Junior Paeds rotation.

thanks to the Fellow Med student of the class of 2k12... there is a
lovely set of notes that if u read this and know this inside-out.. u
can pass your peads exam no problem.

Notes

VERY IMPORTANT TOPICS FOR THE MCQ:
1. the mild-stones of Child development
2. rashes
3. management of children resp symptoms
4. children with a fever
5. immunization

BUT STILL READ THROUGH EVERYTHING!.... AND A TIP FOR THE MCQ WHICH IS
COMPUTERIZED AND DONE AT THE  HOPWOOD CENTER... IF U SEE A PICTURE ...
HOVER YOUR  MOUSE OVER THE PIC FOR A SHORT TIME AND THE TITLE OF THE
PIC WILL COME UP ;)

but in all honesty the notes are quite sufficient (some persons in the faculty say that some of the stuff are not right.... i have yet to find something that is wrong...but anyway)

the major skill you should acquire from this rotation is your history
taking of a pediatric Hx. use the outline you were giving and you
should be fine.  It is this skill you will use to do you case notes...
which is very important + the discussion.

NOTE!!!!!!: DO NOT FORGE SIGNATURES IN THIS ROTATION... DR TROTMANN
CHECKS EVERY SINGLE PROCEDURE CARD AND WILL CALL YOU BACK AFTER SHE
SEES THE DISCREPANCY... AND SHE ALSO REMEMBERS CASE NOTE
DISCUSSIONS... go figure... SO PLEASE BE CREATIVE AND SMART WITH YOUR
DISCUSSION

PLEASE NOTE THAT IN MY YEAR WE DID NOT HAVE A HISTORY TAKING OSCE STATION SO IF U WISH TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THIS... PLEASE GO TO ONE OF THE PERSONS FROM 2K14 (THEY ARE THE FIRST BATCH OF STUDENTS TO DO THE
A HISTORY TAKING OSCE STATION)

ALSO NOTE THAT THESE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE BASED ON MY 3RD YEAR EXPERIENCE AND THE OLDER YEARS... PLEASE CONSULT FRIENDS FROM 2K14 FOR ANY CHANGES TO THE CURRICULUM

CRH Rotation and FMS Comm Health Bus Schedule

Dear All,

Is it possible for you to circulate these brochures to the
undergraduate students who will be rotating through CRH with your
usual orientation material? This information is important for the 3rd,
4th and final year students. The previous CRH brochure has been
updated.
It is also important for the students to know that they can bring
domestic fans to the rooms at the Hall of Residence. I would suggest
that one fan be transported per room (room shared by two persons) If
students bring one fan each don't know if this may cause an issue with
luggage/bus space.

Thanks,
